Analog Versus Digital: 1970s -- 2010s
The debate of digital
versus analog sound seems to continue among both audio engineers and musicians.
While digital sound is now ubiquitous, thirty years ago it was reserved for the
richest studios. Only twenty years ago the professionals around the world could
afford it, and in that time, every digital
aspect of audio equipment was proudly announced. Most of us expected that our
first digital samplers would replace the need for all other keyboards and
synthesizers, together with other sound sources.
But now, it all looks different! Every tiny resemblance of analog sound features
and quality is
proudly advertised. The names of legendary synthesizers are heavily used over
and over to
promote the countless digital simulations of what was once produced by currents
flowing through analog circuitry.
This is to remind us that back then music was made in the real world, by the
real matter, exposed to the real physical influences. Has anyone said that it
sounded better? |
